History of Bank of Oklahoma
The history of Bank of Oklahoma kicked off in 1910 when the Exchange National Bank of Tulsa was created by four men who had bought what remained of the Farmers National Bank that had failed.
Harry F. Sinclair was one of the main investors and he became the president of the bank. In 1917, Exchange National Bank of Tulsa started work on a new building at Third Street and Boston Avenue in Tulsa.
Just over ten years later, the bank would put up another building, a 28-story tower, adjacent to the first.
The combined structure now goes by the name 320 South Boston Building and was Tulsa’s tallest building until 1967. It was the tallest in all of Oklahoma until 1931.
During the Great Depression, when many financial institutions struggled, a number of people in the oil industry injected $18 million of their own money into the bank to ensure it stayed afloat. Thanks to this, it was able to play a key role in the oil boom that flowed in the 30s.
The bank was reorganized in 1933 and it became the National Bank of Tulsa (NBT). NBT later changed the name to Bank of Oklahoma (BOK) in 1975.
In 1976, the bank started moving its employees to the recently finished BOK Tower where it remains to date.
Bank of Oklahoma was bought by George Kaiser in 1990 after being granted the Open Bank Assistance package by the FDIC 4 years earlier.
At that time, the bank had assets valued at $2 billion and 20 branches within Oklahoma.
After the acquisition, a period of aggressive expansion followed as the bank acquired other financial institutions in:
- Oklahoma
- Arizona
- Texas
- Kansas
- New Mexico
- Arkansas
- Colorado
- Missouri

Customer Service? No more.
I am 68 years old and recently approached BOK for a small Line of Credit to complete a garage conversion at my home so I can move into it and move my developmentally disabled brother into the main house. I have been with BOK for close to 40 years. I’ve had multiple loans with BOK…with no issues, all successfully paid out (some early). I currently have an “excellent” credit rating. I have no credit card debt. My mortgage payment on this new house is $281 and I have no other real expenses. My brother, in order to maintain his benefits (housing and, especially, healthcare) will be paying rent. His rent and my Social Security would have been more than enough to meet my financial obligations, as well as pay back this small LOC. They said NO. Why? Because they won’t accept rental income, in spite of the fact that I’m not creating a rental property. I’m needing a safe and healthy home for my brother (who is 65, with aging health issues). The State does not provide enough money to this population so they can live in safe neighborhoods or in healthy environments. I have pulled my personal account from BOK, and as soon as I close down my brother’s trust account next year, I will be pulling his money as well. I’m done with BOK. And BTW, I had $30,000 in my checking account at the time of the request…and they said they didn’t care. It came down to income-to-debt ratio…no flexibility, no loyalty to customer.
Service, what a joke! Nobody cares
Been with this bank for over 20 years. Have a substantial amount of money in my accounts. I have had a horrible experience with two auto loans and wanted to speak to someone about the experience. Contacted my local branch manager who had no time to speak to me. Responded with “if three days from now doesn’t work for you, I can’t help you”… closing my accounts. Nobody cares!
