Langley Federal Credit Union is a credit union that’s based in Newport News in Virginia. It’s chartered and regulated under the National Credit Union Administration’s authority. This credit union is in the list of 100 biggest in the U.S.
Based on the figures for June 2017, this federal credit union had assets that were valued at $2.4 billion. The number of members by the end of 2017 had reached around 245,000.
Langley FCU has 18 branches and these are located in Virginia in the Hampton Roads area. However, members can carry-out ATM transactions from over 55,000 ATMs without attracting a surcharge.
History of Langley Federal Credit Union
1936 – Twenty-five employees of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics deposit $1 each and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Laboratory Federal Credit Union is formed. The value of the assets when the credit union opens is $275.
1942 – The credit union’s name is changed to Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory Federal Credit Union.
1943 – Air Force civilian employees are allowed to become members. The credit union becomes a member of the Virginia Credit Union League. The credit union’s “main office” is located at the NACA cafeteria.
1944 – Assets have increased and are almost reaching $300,000. The number of members has also doubled. The credit union is allowed to start cashing paychecks.
1956 – The credit union’s name is officially changed to Langley Federal Credit Union. Air Force military personnel are allowed to become members.
1960’s – FHA Home Improvement Loans and Student Loans now available. Credit union moves to new headquarters located in the West Area due to size limits of the first headquarters.
1970’s – Member education and marketing increases. Credit union has nearly $75 million in assets and becomes a member of the top 100 credit unions in the country.
1980’s – The credit union merges with Peninsula Postal Federal Credit Union in 1981. The credit union starts a MasterCard program and also brings in an in-house computer. CHIPS phone transaction system and ATM network is established. A member service center is created.
1985 – A new headquarters is completed at the Coliseum Branch
1990’s – Website is launched and an online automated lending database system is put in place
2007 – Chesapeake Branch is launched. It’s the first on the south side of Hampton Roads
2016 – Langley Federal Credit Union Celebrates its 80th
The Headquarters
The corporate offices of Langley Federal credit union are located at 721 Lakefront Commons Suite 400. Newport News, VA 23606. The building is relatively new with construction having been completed in 2003.
The building has 80,000 square feet of space and was named the Best Office Building by the Hampton Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate in 2004. It was also given an Award of Merit for Best Interiors.
The corporate headquarters operations are carried out on the fourth floor of the building. On the fifth floor, there is a board room and meeting facility. From the fifth floor, those inside can enjoy beautiful views of the city center.
