Navy Federal is the largest retail credit union in the United States in terms of number of members and value of assets.

The number of members, as of May 2017, was 7 million while the union’s total assets were valued at $81 billion.

A Brief History of The NFCU

Navy Federal came into being back in 1933. A t that time, it was the Navy Department Employees’ Credit Union of the District of Columbia.

Only individuals who were employed by the Navy and were also in the Federal Employees’ Union could join.

The credit union would be dissolved in 1947 and rechartered as a federal credit union. It was renamed to Navy Department Employees Federal Credit Union (NDEFCU).

The list of those who could join was expanded to include all civilian and military Navy Personnel in DC. In 1951, the running of the union was finally handed off to professionals.

In the next decade, the membership of the union would expand as the geographic limitations were relaxed and enlisted people were also allowed to join.

By 1962, it had taken its current name and had become the biggest credit union in the world, a distinction it’s maintained since.

Navy Federal Headquarters

NFCU’s headquarters are located at 820 Follin Lane, Vienna in Virginia. As would be expected from an institution with a not-for-profit status, Navy Federal’s headquarters are modest going by the standards of modern banking institutions.

In spite of this, plans are already underway to expand the current headquarters, a move that could potentially bring Fairfax County 600 jobs.

The project is expected to cost $114.6 million when completed.

The credit union already acquired several buildings and land opposite its current headquarters. These buildings are to be replaced with a complex that will have 234,000 square feet.

A pedestrian bridge will also be built to connect the new building with the current ones.

Who’s Eligible for Membership?

Navy Federal offers many perks to its members and many people would like to join in. However, the membership is restricted to:

  • DoD Uniformed personnel i.e. those who serve or have served in the Air Force, Navy, Army or Marine Corps
  • DoD Reservists including retirees
  • People serving or who once served in the U.S. Coast Guard

Horrendous! Told NFCU not to touch my TD checking account they did, causing a number of checks to bounce including to the courts . Son was arrested due to check bouncing and bench warrant . Had to hire an attorney and NFCU said they would reimburse me ! 19 months later still waiting reimbursement !

NFCU - Absent, Deceitful and Cold

Usually my experiences with Navy Credit Union is good, but when I really needed them they failed. I moved from Panama to Mexico and am applying for permanent residency in Mexico. In order to obtain permanent residency, an original, certified statement from my financial institution must be provided that shows my income. I contacted NFCU on or about January 7, 2022 and made a request for a certified letter with my account information. They told me it was done and sent out. By January une 14, 2022, I still had not received documents from FEDex and called NFCU tonly to discover they had not sent letter. On January 20, 2022, I was promised the same thing. I called this morning (January 24, 2022) and discovered the documents were not sent or prepared even. I stand to lose my furnishings, the cost of my trip from Mexico to Houston to apply for my residency and the ability to obtain residency in Mexico because NFCU employees lied to me over and over again. No compassion, refused to allow me to speak with corporate office and when it really gets down to it, they could give a sh#* about me.

    No sympathy No help Fraudulent

I had my first very bad experience with Navy Federal insensitivity’s lack of sympathy my account was hacked by some very smart hackers I loss my daughter and a senior I was very vulnerable at time that hacked my account 4 days after burying my daughter I contact the credit union and informed them of what happened got a police report and sent copies of all transactions and was very transparent with them on how the hackers had me to login to my Zelle which they said this is how they would refund me however I was never refunded and Navy federal did a investigation only to come back and say one of the transactions was approved but I was not approved for 3 which was $1558 and that I would have to pay them back now they are insured and I spoke with some one Christy supervisor who was very matter fact unsympathetic and said there’s nothing they can do I asked if I could pay back funds installments she nothing we can do so I am telling my story to ask seniors and anyone to please be careful of hackers and Navy Federal they will not support you or give you anything if you need help a company as big as they are there’s nothing in place to help the little people

    Blood Money . . .

I had my first very negative experience with Navy Federal. Last year I was told by customer service that I was approved for a 12 month loan, first payment was 10/15/20. I had my income reduced dramatically due to COVID. At the beginning of October 2021 I called to continue the loan for another 12 months because I have since lost my job due to the vaccination mandate to state employees- I am allergic to PEG which is in the vaccine therefore I am ineligible to receive it. I discovered NFCU had charged me over $400 in interest saying my plan ended in September! They acknowledged they failed to notify me that the plan was ending, instead referring back to the letter a year ago that had the start date September despite what customer service stated. No communication from NFCU after that date for the next year. No notification or option to continue the program. They acknowledged the lack of communication and said they will endeavor to put in place a policy to keep members better informed. I’m still out $400. Well played NFCU – you got blood money. Thanks for your “help.” Unsatisfactory.

    Mortgage

Do not use this bank for a mortgage! I had Nichole Cantwell working on my refinance and she lost a lot of my documents with PPI! She would request a document, I would upload it to their portal, get the confrontation email that it had been uploaded. Then 3-4 weeks would go by and she would email me asking for the documents I had already submitted!! Her supervisor, Karen Strokes was no help. She said it wasn’t Nichole’s fault as she had too many mortgages and was taking 6 months to close loans. I switched banks and closed in 3 weeks with no lost paperwork. Thanks to Nichole Cantwell and her friend Karen Stokes navy federal lost a 525,000 mortgage. Good job guys.
