Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU) is a credit union with its headquarters in Melbourne, FL. The credit union is state chartered. It’s insured and regulated by the NCUA.

The credit union is currently the 3^rd largest in the state with assets valued at approximately $4 billion as of 2017. The credit union has a member base of more 290,000 individuals.

The credit union’s branches now total 58 and they are located throughout the east coast of Florida. In 2015, the bank had around 750 employees.

History of Space Coast Credit Union

Space Coast Credit Union was established in 1951. At the time of its founding, it was known as Patrick Air Force Base Credit Union. It was launched to serve the Patrick Air Force Base.

At the very beginning, the credit union only had 7 members. Together, they contributed the $372 that the credit union started with.

The credit union would retain its original name until 1980 when it was finally changed to Space Coast Credit Union.

In 2009, the credit union merged with another Florida-based credit union, Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union. The merger was necessitated by the recent financial crisis which had compromised the operations of Easter Financial as a result of bad loans. Eastern Financial was taken over by NCUA and the operations handed to SCCU.

As a result of the merger, the credit union’s assets grew to $3.2 billion. The number of members also increased to 380,000.

In 2011, MidFlorida Credit Union acquired 6 branches of SCCU that were located in the Tampa area. As a result of this, MidFlorida gained 16,000 new members and assets valued at $115 million. Two of SCCU’s branches located in Jacksonville were also acquired by Alive Credit Union in Jacksonville the following year.

Space Coast Credit Union Headquarters

The headquarters of Space Coast Credit Union are located at 8045 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne, FL. Initially the building had 80,000 square feet of space. There is a branch office at the same location that takes up 5,100 square feet. The whole building could accommodate 300 employees at that time.

However, the building has been undergoing expansion with the intention of adding more than 100,000 square feet in a 10-year period starting in 2015.

The expansion is expected to add four structures and each will be 55 feet high. Three of these will serve as office buildings while the other building will serve as a parking garage with a capacity of 500 vehicles.

Among the improvements to be made will be the addition of more vegetation to serve as a buffer between the facility and the residential area nearby.

The expansion was necessitated by the growth of the credit union in recent times. It is expected that the facility will add 600 new jobs by the time it’s completed.
