Dnister Ukrainian Credit Co-operative began in 1951 as a self help lending group affiliated with the Ukrainian Catholic Church. It was known as Self Reliance whose goal was to offer financial help to newly arrived Ukrainian migrants. It was formalised through the establishment of Dnister as a Credit Society in 1959. Dnister is the largest ethnic based credit co-operative in Australia.
