BB&T Bank Headquarters Information

BB&T Corporation A.K.A. Branch Banking and Trust Company is a holding company that specializes in financial services. It’s based in Winston-Salem in North Carolina. It’s banking arm which goes by the same name operates in 15 states plus Washington D.C.

The bank currently has more than 2,100 branches and it offers a wide variety of consumer and commercial banking products and services. It also has divisions that offer:

• Asset management services
• Securities brokerage
• Mortgage and insurance products

At the end of September 2017, the bank had around $220 billion in assets and this made it the 15^th largest bank on the country based on this statistic. However, the bank had a market capitalization of $36 billion which made it the 13^th largest bank based on this statistic.

History of BB&T Bank

BB&T traces its roots back to 1872. This was when Alpheus Branch and Thomas Jefferson Hadley established the Branch and Hadley merchant bank in Wilson, NC.

The bank carried out many transactions with local farmers and in 1887, Branch bought out Hadley’s share in the company. The company was then renamed Branch and Company, Bankers.

Two years later Branch, Hadley and a few other people secured a charter from North Carolina’s General Assembly. The Wilson Banking and Trust Company was formed.

The bank would undergo several name changes before it was finally named Branch Banking and Trust Company.

During World War I, the bank sold Liberty Bonds and by 1923 its assets had grown to $4 million. In 1922, the insurance services were added to the products and services. The mortgage division was added a year later.

BB&T survived the stock market crash of 1929 and was the only bank in Wilson to do so.

The bank merged with Southern National Bank in 1995 and this gave BB&T access to 437 branches located in 220 cities in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The Headquarters

The headquarters of BB&T Bank are located at BB&T Financial Center. This postmodern building is located in Winston-Salem in North Carolina and has over 271,000 square feet of floor space inside.

The building was finished in 1987 and has been the headquarters of this bank since 1995. The Piedmont Club is also located in the building on the 19^th floor.

The BB&T Financial Center was completed at an estimated cost of $24 million but was bought by Aetna Life Insurance Co. in 1991 for only $10.1 million after it was foreclosed.

At the time of its completion, the building was known as One Triad Park and Southern National Bank was the first to move into the building in the early 1990s.

The building’s name was changed to Southern National Financial Center in 1993 after it took up 80,000 square feet in the building. The building’s name would be changed to BB&T Financial Center after the two banks merged.

The building was recently sold to new investors for $60 million.
