History of Berkshire Bank
Berkshire Bank was established in 1846 in the county of Berkshire in Massachusetts. At the time of its founding, it wasn’t FDIC insured and was known as Berkshire County Savings Bank. The Bank wouldn’t be insured by the FDIC until 1982.
A brief timeline of events since 1982 is as follows:
- 1984 – The bank had full trust powers granted
- 1996 – The bank underwent reorganization and it changed into a stock savings bank.
- 1997 – The bank’s name was changed to Berkshire Bank
- 2000 – The bank underwent reorganization again.
- 2012 – The bank underwent reorganization once again
- 2014 – The bank changed class to Insured Commercial Banks, State, Not Members of the FRS. It also changed to a trust company
- 2016 – The bank was reorganized yet again

Berkshire Bank Headquarters
In 2017, Berkshire Bank signed a lease to move its headquarters to 60 State Street located in Government Center in the city of Boston.
60 State Street is a modern skyscraper and it’s located in the well-known State Street. The building was completed in 1977 and is currently the 14th tallest building in the city of Boston. The building stands at 509 feet tall and has a total of 38 floors.
The building has a floor area of more than 800,000 square feet. It stands at the site where the famous Great Britain Coffee-House, a colonial tavern once stood.
The building was designed by Skidmore, Ownings & Merrill, the firm based in Chicago. The building is clad in pink granite which was intended to make it blend in with Faneuil Hall’s red brick.
