History of Bremer Bank
Bremer Bank was founded by Otto Bremer who immigrated to Minnesota from Germany in 1886. Before he set up the bank, he worked as a bookkeeper for the National German American Bank.
Otto Brener worked at this bank for 36 years during which he rose up to become the bank’s chairman. He also co-owned and managed the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company and was the city’s treasurer for more than 10 years.
He would also serve as an advisor to two American presidents:
- Woodrow Wilson
- Franklin D. Roosevelt
During the Great Depression, Bremer invested his own money in small town banks in the area. By the mid-30s, he had stock in 55 area banks.
In 1943, Otto Bremer started the Otto Bremer Company. It was to serve as a holding corporation so he could consolidate his interests in the banks he’d invested in. At this time, he was either the sole or majority owner of most of these banks.
One year later, he formed the Otto Bremer Foundation. This charitable organization was supposed to provide grants in the towns where Bremer Banks were located for public use. The funds for the foundation came from the holding company.
Otto Bremer passed away in 1951 and most of his fortune went to the Otto Bremer Foundation. He was 83 years old at that time.
