Chemical bank is a bank that’s operated by Chemical Financial Corporation. The latter is a bank holding company that’s based in Midland, Mi. Chemical bank is the largest bank in the state of Michigan and it currently has 249 branches.

Note: This bank shouldn’t be confused with the Chemical Bank that merged with Chase Manhattan.

The bank also operates in two other parts of the country i.e. northern Indiana and northeast Ohio. The bank’s total assets have been valued at $18.78 billion as of the end of June 2017.

The corporation is listed in The NASDAQ Stock Market where its common stock trades under with the ticker symbol CHFC.

It’s currently in The NASDAQ Global Select Market and also in the S&P MidCap 400.

History of Chemical Bank

Chemical Bank was launched as Chemical State Savings Bank back in 1917. Twenty years later, the headquarters of the bank would play a part in history when it became the site of Tony Chebatoris’ bank robbery.

The robbery would result in the only Chebatoris being the first and only man in the state to receive a death penalty.

The bank would change its name to Chemical Bank Trust in 1964 before finally changing its name to Chemical Bank ten years later.

Chemical Bank has acquired a number of financial institutions in recent times. These included:

• A.K Financial Corporation in 2010
• Northwestern Bank in 2014 for which they paid $121 million in cash
• Monarch Community Bancorp in April 2015 for $27.2 million in stock
• Lake Michigan Financial Corporation in June 2015. $187.4 million in stock and cash was paid for the acquisition
• Talmer Bancorp in August 2016. This was the largest acquisition yet by Chemical Bank. The deal is valued at approximately $1.7 billion (cash and stock).
