History of City National Bank
City National Bank was established by Alfred S. Hart in 1954. The bank’s headquarters at that time were located at 400 North Roxbury Drive, Beverly Hills. This remained the bank’s headquarters until 2004 when they moved their offices to the present location.
The bank would acquire seven banks in the 1990s. These were:
- First Los Angeles Bank in 1995
- Ventura County National Bank in 1997
- Frontier Bank in 1997
- Riverside National Bank in 1997
- Harbor Bank in 1998
- North American Trust Company in 1998
- American Pacific State Bank in 1999
The bank established its presence in Northern California when it bought The Pacific Bank in the year 2000. Two years later, they acquired Civic BanCorp which was based in Oakland.
The bank had customers who did their business in Los Angeles and in New York and therefore decided to open an office on the East Coast in New York City to serve these customers. The bank was also hoping to bring in a few new customers from Manhattan.
From the time it was formed to 1964, the bank was known as City National Bank of Beverly Hills. It was only in February of 1964 that the bank changed its name to what it is now.
The Headquarters
The headquarters of City National Bank are located in City National Plaza in Downtown LA. The plaza is a skyscraper complex with two towers. Both buildings have 52 floors that are served by 64 elevators.
The building was opened in 1972 when it was known as ARCO Plaza and its height is 700 feet. When the towers were completed, they were the tallest buildings in Los Angeles until they were overtaken a year later. Before the completion of the World Trade Center in New York, the two were the tallest twin buildings in the world.
In 2005, the complex took on the name City National Plaza. The south tower is now known as City National Tower and this is where City National Bank’s offices are located. The north tower is called Paul Hastings Tower.
