Coastal Credit Union A.K.A. Coastal Federal Credit Union is a financial cooperative that’s owned by its members and headquartered in Raleigh, NC.

At the end of the third quarter of 2017, Coastal Credit Union had Assets valued at over $2.9 billion and had generated an income of almost $78 million.

Based on its asset size, Coastal Credit Union was ranked the 70^th largest credit union in the country in 2017 (based on NCUA figures).

The credit union also has a sizeable member base with more than 239,000 members by the end of 2017. This would make it the 59^th largest credit union based on these figures only.

History of Coastal Federal

Coastal Federal Credit Union started off in 1967 and since then, it has gone on to become one of the best performing financial institutions of its kind in the country. A few landmarks in its past include:

• 1967 – The credit union received a charter and started to operate as IBM Raleigh Employees Federal Credit Union. It was founded by 8 IBM employees who lived in Raleigh
• 1980 – The Credit union’s ATM network was put into place. Now, the network is part of a larger network which allows members to use 50,000 ATMs in the U.S. without incurring a surcharge
• 1984 – The credit union started availing mortgages to its members
• 1991 – The membership regulations are changed to allow people employed by other businesses to also join the credit union.
• 1994 – The credit union changes its name to Coastal Federal Credit Union
• 1995-96 – Launched its website and became the 13 financial institution around the world to provide online banking
• 2005- Launched a video teller system which now allows members to transact business when the branch is closed
• 2007 – The credit union launched Daymark Realty, a subsidiary that provides its members with services to help them buy or sell houses
• 2011 – The Coastal Credit Union Foundation is launched to give grants to groups in the state that help the less fortunate and provide financial education

Coastal Credit Union Headquarters

The headquarters of Coastal Federal Credit Union are located in an office building at 1000 St. Albans Drive in Raleigh, NC. The office building has 147,291 square feet of floor space.

This building was put up in 1998 thus it’s relatively new. It has six stories above ground and the exterior of the building features masonry and glass. It has a steel frame construction.

The building had been put up for a multi-national tenant and an institutional investor. The entry to the property is lined with trees and has lampposts for lighting. The entryway is two stories high and clad in stone.

The grounds feature multi-layered landscaping plus a stone wall. There is a loading dock, a vestibule, two passenger elevators and a service elevator. The HVAC system is computerized and the building is also served by a fiber optic cable.
