Deutsche Bank Historical Facts

  • The bank was established in 1870 in Berlin.
  • It was set up to act as a specialist bank for those engaging in foreign trade.
  • The bank was granted its licenses by the Prussian government in march of 1870.
  • Before the bank was established, importers and exporters in Germany were forced to rely on banks in England and France. This was a problem because German currency was subjected to a higher discount rate since it was not well known in international trade.
  • After the end of World War One, the bank had lost most of its assets outside of Germany and also had to sell some of its other holdings.
  • However, the bank would also have some new businesses and played important roles in establishing UFA, the film production company and the Daimler Benz merger.
  • The bank merged with some local banks in 1929, the biggest merger in banking history in the country at that point. This was as a result of rising costs.
  • After WWII, the bank was broken up into 10 regional banks that would later consolidate into three before merging once again to form Deutsche Bank AG.

The Headquarters

The bank’s headquarters are located at The Deutsche Bank Twin Towers in Frankfurt. The towers are 509 feet tall. The towers have been nicknamed debit and credit.

The towers are located at the borders of three city districts. This area is also the city’s central business district. At the entrance of the building is the largest man-shaped monolith in the world.

At the time of its construction between 1979 and 1984, the building was intended to serve as a hotel for the Hyatt Hotels Corporation. When the hotel cancelled its plans mid-construction, the Deutsche Bank made the decision to have its main offices there.

The headquarters are made up of three parts. At the base, there’s a four-story building and the two towers on top of it. The towers were made in the form of irregular trapezoids. However, the floor plans of both buildings are the same.

The two towers have become quite popular as symbols of the German economy in print and on television. The bank’s first major renovation was in 2007. This was due to a change in fire regulations. The renovations continued until 2011. At the end of it, the building’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions had been reduced by at least 50%.
