History of First Tennessee Bank
In 1864 Frank Davis submitted the charter to open Memphis’ first federally chartered bank. This was during the Civil War and the city was still under martial law following its capture by the Union Army. The bank was officially chartered as the First National Bank of Memphis.
The bank outlasted the war by in 1878, an outbreak of yellow fever in Memphis resulted in thousands of deaths. Many more fled from the city and the population went down by more than half. However, the bank would remain open, serving customers for 3 hours every day while also distributing relief funds that had come in from other parts of the United States.
In 1897, the bank’s deposits would go over the $1 million mark after it acquired the German Bank. The bank would also be one of the five in the 12 districts that assisted in the implementation of the Federal Reserve Act (1913).
The bank merged with Central-State National Bank in 1926 but kept its name even as the other bank took over operations.
In the years to come, the bank would survive:
- Floods
- Recessions
- The Great Depression
- World wars
Despite all the challenges, the bank grew to become a major regional financial services company. By 1967, it was the biggest bank in the Mid-South. First National Holding Corporation, a holding company was formed in 1969 before the name was changed to First Tennessee National Corporation in 1971.
The holding company acquired several banks and changed their names to First Tennessee Bank. However, it wouldn’t be until 1977 before First National also adopted the same name.
More recently, the bank has embarked on efforts to expand beyond Tennessee and has been offering private client and commercial banking services to various markets in the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast.
