Guaranty Bank was a bank that was based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The bank was recently shut down due to bank failure by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. The FDIC was named receiver and the assets of the bank were later sold to First Citizens Bancshares.
At the time of its closing, the bank had 119 branches. 107 of these branches were kiosks which were located in Walmart Supercenters and grocery stores. The bank’s branches could be found in the following states:

- Michigan
- Georgia
- Illinois
- Minnesota
In some locations, the bank operated under the name BestBank. Only the 12 stand-alone branches of Guaranty Bank were reopened as First Citizens Bank. 10 of these are in Wisconsin, one is in Illinois and the last is in Minnesota. The remaining branches did not open.
History of Guaranty Bank
Guaranty bank has a long history, having been opened in 1923 as a savings and loan association. Back then, it was known as Guaranty Savings and Loan Association.
The bank would operate under this name until 1989 when it was renamed Guaranty Bank For Savings, Savings Association. One year later, the bank would once again be rebranded as Guaranty Bank, State Savings Bank.
In 1992, the bank would once again undergo some changes as it moved its offices to 7901 West Brown Deer Road Milwaukee, WI. It also changed from a savings and loan association to a state savings bank and changed its name to Guaranty Bank, S.S.B.
Less than two years later, the bank moved its offices again to 4000 West Brown Deer Road Milwaukee, WI.
In 2002, the bank would change its status once again as it became a Federal Savings Bank and was renamed Guaranty Bank.
In 2013, the bank relocated to its last offices on, 501 West Northshore Drive Glendale, WI. Just over four years later, the bank failed and its remaining assets were sold to First Citizen Bancshares.
The bank was part of Fannie Mae’s $2 billion program which was designed to provide residential mortgages to ethnic minorities. It joined the program in 2004.
Before it was shut down, the bank had sold its Wholesale mortgage division, GB Mortgage, and its Shelter Mortgage division in 2009 and 2013 respectively.
Guaranty Bank’s Last Headquarters
Guaranty’s last main offices were located at 501 W Northshore Dr. in Glendale, Wisconsin. The building was completed in 2006 and features a combination of retail stores and offices.
Among the amenities withing the building is a full servie health club and a variety of restaurants, a deli and other shops.
Closure of Guaranty Bank
At the time of its closure, guarantee bank had been in operation for 94 years. The bank’s main operations were centered around its grocery store branches.
Guaranty was one of the 20 largest banks that had its headquarters in Wisconsin. It had assets valued at approximately $1 billion.
The bank had struggled to improve its financial situation since 2009. In the 10 years prior to its closure, it had only posted a profit twice.
