Brief History of ICICI Bank

In 1994, the bank was founded by an Indian financial institution called ICICI Limited. The bank was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. The company has a history that goes back to 1955 when it was started.

It was an initiative of the Indian Government, the World Bank and Indian Industry representatives. When it was founded, it was with the intention of creating a financial institution that would offer financing to businesses in India in the medium and long-term.

Before the 1990s, the ICICI was just a development financial institution. However, it changed its operations and started offering more products and services. It did this directly and also through affiliates and subsidiaries. ICICI Bank was one of these subsidiaries.

From 1998, the shareholding of ICICI in the bank has gone down to 46% as a result of:

  • A share public offering in India in the 1998 fiscal year
  • An equity offering in the 2000 fiscal year. This was in the form of NYSE listed ADRs
  • The bank’s acquisition of Bank of Madura in the 2001 fiscal year (the transaction was all-stock)
  • Secondary market sales in 2001 and 2002 to institutional investors

ICICI was the first company based in India and the first financial institution from Asia (excluding Japan) to be listed on the NYSE.
