Once upon a time, TCF Bank was known as the Twin City Building and Loan Association. This was when it was founded in 1923. Thirteen years later, it was given a federal charter. Its name was then changed to Twin City Federal Savings and Loan Association.
The initials TCF would finally be made part of the name when the company went public. This was in 1986.
During the next decade, the bank expanded into Michigan after acquiring two banks. It has expanded into other states since then. TCF Bank can now be found in:

Secretly charge service fee on product that they advised as free fee account
Worst banking experiences that I have ever had. They secretly charged my account ( which they advitised as no fee account) a service fee for $10 every month consecutively for 11 months until I noticed my bank has $0 balance and even a -$30 fee. They said my account is inactive so they changed it to Dormant account so they started to charge me a year ago. I asked why didn’t you notify me? They said because you enrolled in paperless. I asked why I never receive email notification? They told me it is my responsibility to check my account center to see it on a regular base. They never send me email notification but charged me service fee every month till the balance became negative. Then they closed my account without notifying me neither. I asked for reimbursement but they said I cannot get a penny since my account had been closed by them. I have reported this to FDIC and BBB, I don’t care if I can get my money back, what I care is other people don’t get fooled by such banks secretly charged in the future. They shouldn’t charge service fee on product that they advised as no fee account.
Bad business
I went to Cub Foods where they have a TCF where I have a account. They charged me 4times at the amount of $49.00 for insufficient funds on the 28th on same day I deposit . I deposited over $3,000 on the 28th of June and the charge was the same day. I will be closing my account when all my amounts come out. TCF is creating Fraud.
I have my mortgage with TCF and since the merger, they have managed to misapply payments from 8/1/20 to current. They have messed up my account so severely that they are trying to charge me for $1000,00 overdue fees due to their accounting errors. This is not written into my contract and they refuse to send me copies of a letter informing me about the fees. For the last 4 months, I make my payments and my payoff balance increases every time. I am recommending if you cannot resolve your issues with TCF just contact the Attorney General, OCC, and CFPD. These are the organizations that can force TCF into complying with Federal laws. I have also taken my account one step further and have just contact Huntington Bank with my issues and the according to the CFPB all accounts are to be balanced when transfered.
My review for tcf bank is that ,i have been discrimation against on so many occassion by the tcf bank employee in the state of Illinios because I have inquiry about my accounts for overdraft charges. I have also been give false information that i was going to be contact by upper management and no one has contact me yet in regard of the false overdraft that i have been charge with and still been charge with so my next step is to go a different rout.e. My last discrimination was when I was at the tcf location in River Forest location on Lake St inside the Jewel Food Store in the state of Illinios., on April 30, 2021. I may be contact at 17084753731
