This bank’s official name is MUFG Union Bank. This is the name it took after being acquired by The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ. Before the acquisition, it was known as the Union Bank of California, N.A.

Union Bank mainly operates in California and Washington although it also has commercial branches in the cities of:

• Houston

The bank also has two international offices. The bank operates as a subsidiary of MUFG Americas Holdings Corporation.

Brief History of Union Bank

Union bank has a history that goes back around 150 years. There are five notable institutions that played key roles in getting the bank to its current status:

1. The Bank of California: This bank was founded in 1864 and is the oldest of the five institutions.
2. First National Bank: This was a Californian bank that was founded in 1883.
3. The Bank of Personal Service: This is the bank that would first be known as Union Bank. It was founded in 1918 before changing its name to Union Bank 40 years later.
4. The Bank of Tokyo of California: This Bank was founded in 1952
5. The Mitsubishi Bank of California: This was the youngest of the banks and was founded in 1972.

Through a series of 4 mergers, these five banks would evolve into what is now known as MUFG Union Bank:

• 1975: This was the year of the first merger. The Bank of Tokyo and 1^st National Bank merged to form California First Bank
• 1988: Two mergers took place in this year. Union Bank and California First Bank Merged. The Union Bank name was kept. The Mitsubishi Bank of California and The Bank of California also merged in this year under the name, The Bank of California.
• 1996: Union Bank and The Bank of California Merged to form the Union Bank of California.

MUFG Union Bank Headquarters

Union Bank’s headquarters is at the 1251 Avenue of the Americas building on Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. It was the second of the three buildings to be completed.

The building was completed by 1972 as part of the Rockefeller Center expansion that’s known as the XYZ Buildings. It’s the tallest of the three buildings at 750 feet and the second tallest in the Rockefeller Center.

It has 54 stories and is among the 100 tallest buildings in the country. The building has however little presence in the city skyline due to the presence of many tall buildings around it.

• The National Hockey League
