History of Washington Federal
Washington Federal was launched as Ballard Savings and Loan Association in 1917. The company changed from a state charter to a federal charter in 1935 and became a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank System.
Ballard Federal Savings and Loan Association entered a merger with Washington Federal Savings and Loan Association of Bothell in 1958. The latter bank’s name was believed would bring wider acceptance from more areas and was thus retained.
Seattle Federal Savings and Loan Association also merged with the company in 1971. It had three branches at that time. First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Mount Vernon would also join 7 years later.
In 1982, the company changed to a federal stock association from a federal mutual one. In the 80s the company would add other banks including:
- United First Federal from Boise in 1987
- Provident Federal Savings and Loan from Boise in 1987
- Northwest Federal Savings and Loan from Boise in 1988
- Freedom Federal Savings and Loan from Corvallis in 1988
These acquisitions were representative of the company’s strong growth during this decade. The acquisitions brought in new branches which allowed the company to grow into new parts of the country.
A reorganization would once again be done in 1995 and the bank became a subsidiary of the Washington Federal, Inc. holding company.
The bank would expand its presence into Las Vegas and this was its first branch in the state of Nevada. In the same year, it would also open two branches in Arizona.
More recently, the bank closed seven of its branches and opened new ones in 2014. The new branches are located in the state of Texas in New Mexico, Dallas and Hobbs.
