History of Webster Bank
Webster Bank started off as First Federal Savings of Waterbury which was founded by Harold Webster Smith in 1935. By 1938, the bank’s assets had gone past the $1 million mark.
Decades later in 1986, the bank changed to a stock ownership format and also formed a holding company. The following year, Harold Webster Smith was succeeded by his son, James C. Smith as the CEO.
In 1997, the bank added Webster Trust Company and investment services to its products and services. One year later, the bank acquired Eagle Bank of Bristol. This meant that the bank’s branches in the state exceeded 100 for the first time. In the same year, the bank purchased Damman Insurance, becoming the first bank in Connecticut to buy an insurance agency.
In 2002, the company was finally listed in the NYSE, trading under the symbol WBS. One year later, the bank reached an agreement to acquire FirstFed America Bancorp, Inc. When the deal was completed the following year, it meant that Webster Bank’s retail services were available outside Connecticut for the first time ever as they entered markets in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
When Webster acquired HAS Bank in 2005, it became the country’s number one bank administrator and trustee of health savings accounts. In 2006, NewMil Bank was acquired. Ten years later, the bank added 17 Citibank branches in Boston and a number of ATMs to its network.

A credit should have been done in opinion
bad service no protection against scammers
Simply horrible service- incompetent.
Wethersfield, CT branch, in my opinion, has ill informed and non responsive employees. I have closed our business accounts because of their attitude and incompetency.
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE !
Wendy in customer service was WONDERFUL today. She helped me set up my business DDA
on-line. Great personality and the perfect retail banker. Also, Art Cantu in the Huntington office is great. In fact, the ENTIRE staff is always very pleasant. I am a retired banker and appreciate good service when I see it and experience it !
