Although the bank’s origins were in the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado, it has since relocated and now its headquarters are located in Kansas City Missouri.

Currently, the bank holding company, Dickson Financial Corporation, is valued at around $2 billion. Academy Bank holds an estimated $1.2 billion of these assets. The bank also has deposits of almost $1 billion.

By 2015, Academy Bank was offering its services through 98 branches which are located in:

  • Colorado
  • Missouri
  • Kansas
  • Arizona
  • Florida

Some of the bank’s branches are Walmart in-store bank branches.

Brief History of Academy Bank

Academy Bank was founded in 1966. It was originally known as Air Academy National Bank. It was based at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado.

The bank holding company that now serves as Academy Bank’s parent company wouldn’t be established until 1988.

The bank would undergo substantial reorganization in 1991. In 2000, the bank’s headquarters were moved from their initial location to the USAF Academy, CO.

Five years later, the bank’s headquarters would once again be shifted, this time to Colorado Springs. At the same time as the change in location, the bank also changed its name to Academy Bank, National Association.

The bank’s headquarters would remain at their location in Colorado Springs until 2017 when they were moved out of state for the first time to Kansas City, Missouri.

Academy Bank has also made a number of Acquisitions over the years such as:

  • SunBank, National Association in Phoenix, AZ (2015)
  • Southern Commerce Bank, National Association in Tampa, FL (2015)
  • Merit Bank in Overland Park, KS (2017)

It should be noted that at the time of some acquisitions, the financial institutions being acquired were already owned by the bank holding company, Dickinson Financial Corporation. The banks had been operating independently, however, until the time they were folded under the Academy Bank umbrella. This was the case for:

  • SunBank
  • Southern Commerce Bank

Academy Bank Headquarters

The headquarters of Academy Bank are located at 1111 Main Street in downtown Kansas City. The building is known as Town Pavilion.

Town Pavilion stands at 591 feet and has a total of 38 stories. Several well-known retail buildings once stood at the same site including:

  • A Kline’s Department Store
  • Kresge’s Dime Store

An 11-story building that was once the Harzfeld’s Department store and another building that was once the Boley Building were preserved. The two are now part of the skyscraper’s design.

Construction of Town Pavilion concluded in 1986 and at the moment, it’s Kansas City’s 2nd-tallest habitable building; the third in the state of Missouri.

When the town was completed, it was known as the AT&T Town Pavilion. It was built to serve as AT&T’s regional headquarters in the Southwest. AT&T are still among the building’s tenants but are no longer the major tenants.

Town Pavilion was briefly the state’s tallest building when it was completed. This changed two years later.

    I've been robbed by Academy.

My account was closed by Academy Bank, according to them, on April 23rd. I called for a week after using my account number and was told there was a zero balance. On May 3rd they received my social security check, deposited it into my account. On that same day, I withdrew 600 for my rent. Later that same evening, I tried to use my debit card at an ATM and was told my card was reported lost or stolen. They said that was because the account was closed. I continued calling daily to be told I had a zero balance except that it was telling me that I went from $800.93 to overdrawn by that amount. I’m out 800 dollars on a fixed income.

Hard to get funds upon maturity

Makes it very hard to get funds after CD matures…their rates are way below the average rates of other on-line banks. Go elsewhere.
