History of BMO Harris Bank

BMO Harris’ history was started by Norman Wait Harris in 1882 when he founded N.W. Harris & Co. Harris was a municipal bond broker based in Chicago. Harris Trust and Savings Bank would be formed in 1907.

In 1960, the bank merged with Chicago National Bank and would later be restructured in 1972 and the bank would become Harris Bankcorp, Inc.

Bank of Montreal which would later become BMO Financial Group acquired the bank in 1984. Following the acquisition, the bank would grow rapidly by acquiring a number of banks including:

  • First National Bank of Barrington (1985)
  • State Bank of St. Charles (1988)
  • National Bank of Batavia (1988)
  • Libertyville Federal Savings Bank and Loan (1990)
  • Frankfort Bancshares (1990)

Through the 90s and 2000s the bank would continue to expand as it acquired more banks. In 2005, name Harris Bankcorp was changed and the bank became BMO Harris Bank.

In recent times, the bank has made several notable acquisitions including purchasing Marshall & Ilsley Corporation for approximately $4.1 billion in stock.

The Headquarters

The current headquarters of BMO Harris is located in a 3-building complex in the Loop neighborhood in Chicago.

The first of the three buildings was constructed in 1910 and is located at 119 West Monroe Street. It’s 21 stories high. The building’s entrance is flanked by two lion sculptures.

The second building was added in 1960, a 23-story structure that’s located to the east and has the address 111 West Monroe.

The third building, which is known as the Harris Bank Addition II is the tallest and reaches 510 feet high. I was added in 1974 and it has 38 floors.

The building has 592,000 square feet of space and is currently Chicago’s 83rd tallest building. The building is set back from the property line to allow for a fountain and a plaza.

The buildings occupants can walk across the entire complex since the buildings are connected on 15 floors.

Both additions were designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and are both faced with stainless steel and glass.

Some of the amenities available inside the complex include:

  • A full service cafeteria with breakfast and lunch foods
  • A Greek restaurant
  • A barbershop – Truefitt & Hill
  • Sundry Store
  • Concierge services

Tenants can also borrow umbrellas from 111 West Monroe. There’s also a fitness center on the building’s 7th floor and a conference center on the 8th floor of the same building. There are many other shops and stores within walking distance.

Terrible customer support. A single star is generous.

BMO just took over the bank I’ve used for decades and 5 weeks in I’m still unable to access account information online so can’t access account info., can’t transfer funds, can’t pay bills. I’ve spent something close to three hours and gone thru 4 or 5 customer service reps who are apparently flummoxed by the error code that keeps popping up. No one helps and every time I hang up, I get a chipper note asking me to rate my service. No one has ever bothered to find out why I keep giving them a single star. My three accounts are in a family trust which greatly increases the hassle to pull my accounts and (not insignificant) funds from this bank. But maybe I should just do it.
