Boeing Employees Credit Union, commonly known as BECU, is a credit union that was founded in 1935. This credit union was originally known as the Fellowship Credit Union and its main purpose was to serve the employees of The Boeing Company.

The founding members were 18 employees of Boeing. This credit union has been known as Boeing Employees Credit Union for most of its life. It’s based in Tukwila, Washington.

This credit union has grown significantly since then and currently has more than 1 million members. Its assets have now exceeded $12 billion. It’s the largest credit union in the state of Washington and the fourth largest in the whole country.

BECU mainly operates in the Puget Sound Region where it has more than 45 locations. It also has two branches in Spokane.

Membership

In the beginning, the only people who were eligible to join BECU were those employed by:

  • The Boeing Company
  • BECU
  • Boeing subsidiaries and affiliates
  • The Museum of Flight

These regulations were however relaxed in 2002. Now, any resident of the state of Washington and their family members can join the credit union.

A Brief History of BECU

  • 1935: The Fellowship Credit Union was founded by 18 Boeing employees. Each contributed $0.5. The first loan was for $2.5 to a fellow employee who need the money for tools.
  • 1936: The group received a charter from the state of Washington and issued their first account passbook on January of the same year. By the end of the year, membership had reached 490.
  • 1937: The bank issued its first boat loan for a Wecco Clipper.
  • 1949: To reflect the membership, the credit union adopted the name Boeing Employees’ Credit Union.
  • 1950: Membership reaches 12,000
  • 1953: Assets reached $1 Million
  • 1955: Membership reaches 20,500, assets valued at $5 million and the credit union becomes the 10th largest in the country and the largest in the state
  • 1968: New office locations are opened at new Boeing plants. Total number of branches reaches 6.
  • 1973: Family members of employees are allowed to join.
  • 1980: New products including checking accounts, ATM cards, CDs and IRAs are introduced. VISA credit cards and home equity loans are available by the mid-80s.
  • 1985: 50th Membership stands at 96,000 with $569 million in assets.
  • 1989: First BECU ATM is installed. Membership is at 150,000 and BECU itself employs 200 people.

Headquarters

BECU’s current headquarters are located at 12770 Gateway Drive in Tukwila. The building is part of the Gateway Center; a business campus that’s located in North Tukwila. After recent purchases, BECU now owns most of the other buildings in the campus as well.

Available Services

Since BECU is a credit union, it’s not a for-profit organization like a regular bank. It’s able to offer regular banking services such as:

  • Checking and savings account
  • Credit cards
  • IRAs
  • CDs etc.

The credit union is however able to offer its credit facilities at more competitive rates than commercial banks. Members can take out a loan for:

  • Vehicles
  • Boats
  • Houses etc.

The bank also provides planning and investing services and business banking.
