History of Central Bank

The history of this bank started in January 1902 when the Central Missouri Trust Company was created with the help of Lon Stephens. Lon Stephens had been a state treasurer and governor before then.

In 1905, Sam Baker Cook became the president of Central Missouri Trust Company. The legacy he started has continued to the present day.

Despite having just arrived in Jefferson City in 1900, Cook was very committed to serving the city. Following the burning down of the Capitol building in 1911, he went up against other leaders in the city to ensure the state capitol would remain Jefferson City.

The Central Missouri Trust Company was moved to a stone building in Carthage that was seven stories high. The building, which is popularly known as ‘the first skyscraper’, still stands at the corner of High Street and Madison.

The bank’s resources tripled in its first 15 years as it continued to help the city of Jefferson to grow. Cook passed on in 1931 and his son took over as president at the peak of the Great Depression. Many local and state governments were threatened by the situation.

However, the bank helped the state by availing a $1 million loan to it. The bank continued its operations despite the crisis and was only one of two banks in the city to survive the period.

In the years that followed, Central Bank continued its growth until it finally became a corporation in 1970; Central Bancompany.
