History of the Bank

  • Comerica traces its roots back to the Detroit Savings Fund Institute which was founded in 1849 by Elon Farnsworth.
  • In 1871, the bank’s name was changed The Detroit Savings Bank
  • In 1936, it became The Detroit Bank and was one of the few banks based in that area that survived the Great Depression.
  • The Detroit Bank & Trust Company was formed twenty years later (1956) following the merger of The Detroit Bank with Birmingham National Bank, Detroit Wabeek Bank and Trust Company and Ferndale National Bank.
  • The Detroit Bank & Trust Company formed DetroitBank Corporation in 1973. This was a holding company.
  • The holding company changed its name to Comerica Inc. in 1982. In the same year, the company launched its operations in Florida.
  • The Bank of the Commonwealth of Michigan was acquired in 1983.
  • Comerica would enter Texas for the first time after the acquisition of Grand Bancshares
  • In 1991, Comerica acquired Plaza Commerce Bancorp and InBancshares, marking its entry into California.
  • The bank merged with Manufacturers National Corporation in 1992
  • In 2001, Comerica acquired Imperial Bank of California.
  • In an effort to move closer to the customers in the Sun Belt, it was announced in 2007 that the bank would be shifting its corporate HQs to Dallas.

At the moment, the headquarters of Comerica Bank are located in Comerica Bank Tower in Dallas Texas. The building is located in the Main Street District in the city’s downtown area.

The height of the building is 787 feet which makes it the city’s 3rd tallest building. In the state of Texas, it’s the 6th tallest while in the whole of the United States, it’s the 61st tallest building.

Construction of the building was completed in 1987 and it offers office space totaling 1.5m sq. ft.

When it was first completed, the building served as the head office of MCorp Bank. At that time, it was known as Momentum Place. The economic struggles in the late 80s made the building the subject of many legal wrangles. MCorp would collapse only a short while after the building was completed.

The building was chosen by Comerica as its corporate headquarters after it decided to move from its previous location in 2007.

The buildings first five floors house the banking hall which has a vaulted ceiling and a skylight. It also has underground parking which has 3 levels. It also has a number of retail spaces below the ground level due to the high pedestrian traffic.
