A Brief History of Commerce Bank

This bank has roots that go back to 1865 when the Kansas City Savings Association was founded by Francis Reid Long. The bank had an initial capital of $10,000.

In 1881, the bank was acquired by William Stone Woods and its name was changed to National Bank of Commerce. The bank claimed to be the largest bank west of Chicago at that time.

The bank took on the name Commerce Bank in 1903 but would be placed into receivership after the Panic of 1907. The bank was returned back to its owners a brief while later after it had paid its depositors.

For around two years, from 1903 to 1905, future president, Harry S. Truman worked at the bank. His signature would be among those added to the last beam used in the construction of Commerce Tower.

For five years in a row until 2014, Commerce Bank was in the top ten of the list of America’s Best Banks by Forbes.

The bank was among the least affected by the 2007/2008 financial crisis. The bank was the 3rd largest bank in the country to turn down assistance from the government.

Commerce Bank Headquarters

Currently, commerce bank’s headquarters are located at 1000 Walnut Street in Kansas City Missouri. The building is known as the Commerce Bank Building and was completed in 1986.

Before moving to the new location, the bank’s headquarters were located at Commerce Tower in Downtown Kansas City. This 30-foot skyscraper is one of the tallest habitable structures in the city.

The final beam that was used in the construction of this tower was signed by 18,000 people. Among them was Harry S Truman.
