Compass Bank is the banking division of BBVA Compass Bancshares Inc. The latter is a financial holding company in the United States which is a subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria which is based in Spain.

A Brief Timeline of the Bank

Compared to other large banks in the country, Compass Bank is relatively new to the business. The bank was established in 1964. It was the first new bank in the city of Birmingham for nearly 20 years.

  • 1964 – Compass Bank opens its doors as Central Bank in Birmingham, AL
  • 1970 – The bank’s branches start to open on Saturdays. A first for banks in the country.
  • 1971 – State National Bank is acquired by Central Bank. The resulting institution will later form the second multibank holding company, Central Bancshares of the South, Inc.
  • 1975 – The bank’s assets exceed $1 billion
  • 1978 – The bank introduces the first debit cards and ATM in Alabama. In only 3 months, ATM operations in the city are higher than the national average
  • 1981-87 – Ten affiliate banks merge to form Alabama’s largest bank. A branch is established in New York
  • 1991-1993 – Expansion into Florida continues with assets in Texas surpassing $1 billion. The bank changes its name to Compass
  • 1995 – The Bank’s assets exceed $10 billion and its market capitalization crosses the $1 billion mark for the first time.
  • 2007 – The bank is acquired by BBVA, Spain’s 2nd largest bank

The Headquarters

The headquarters of Compass Bank are located in Daniel building in Birmingham, AL. The building was once the regional office of Daniel International, a construction company.

The building was put up in 1970. The building is 238 feet high and has 20 stories.

The building has been owned by Compass Bancshares since 1993. The bank moved into the building after doing a lot of renovation. Compass Bank’s previous headquarters was sold to UAB.

The main branch of the bank is also in the building which is the tallest of all the buildings in the downtown section of the city outside the CBD.

In 2010, there was a fire outbreak in the building. The fire did significant damage to the basement. There was also water and smoke damage to several other floors of the building. Employees worked from other locations while repairs were being carried out.
