History of Dollar Bank

The story of this Pittsburgh financial institution goes all the way back to July 1855 when it was founded as the Pittsburgh Dollar Savings institution. On its first day of operation, it had deposits of $53 in total.

The bank was renamed to The Dollar Savings Bank in 1858. The banks first office would be opened in 1871. The building which is located on Fourth Avenue is still there today.

Two lions made from stone were placed at the entrance of the building. The symbolic lions became iconic and from 2009 to 2013, a project worked on restoring the lions. The original lions can now be seen inside the building on Fourth Avenue.

In 1896, the bank added a board room to the Fourth Avenue building. In 1906, the East and West wings of the building were added.

The building on Fourth Avenue is now known as the Dollar Bank Heritage Center and people can see things such as:

  • Banking machines from the old days
  • Advertising used by dollar bank in the old days
  • Photographs and oil portraits of bank officials
  • Hand-written ledgers etc.

In 1931, at the heart of the Great Depression, the bank had $1 million in cash brought to the floor of the bank office. This was meant to reassure customers that their money was still there. The bank didn’t shut down even once during this period.

By 1949, the book value of the bank’s assets had exceeded $100 million. As the bank continued to grow, it would buy a number of buildings for its used including the Boyd Building in 1950 and the DeRoy Building in 1956.
