Fifth Third Bank is the main subsidiary of Fifth Third Bancorp; a holding company. It’s a regional bank that’s operating under an Ohio Charter.

Although the bank is relatively small, it has a history that goes back to 1858. This was when the Bank of the Ohio Valley was launched in Cincinnati. In 1863, the Third National Bank started and less than a decade later, it acquired the older bank. This acquisition would be the first of many to come later.

The Name

The bank’s unique name is one of the results of a merger between the Fifth National Bank and Third National Bank. Initially, the name had a hyphen between Fifth and Third but this was later dropped.

The bank’s name is also the subject of a legend. The merger between the two banks took place during the prohibition. Although Third National Bank was the bigger bank, it’s said that the name Fifth Third was preferred rather than Third Fifth as it could be thought that the name was a reference to three fifths of alcohol.

The Headquarters

Fifth Third Bank is headquartered at the Fifth Third Center. This is a skyscraper that was built in downtown Cincinnati on Fountain Square; the city’s symbolic center.

Fifth Third Center has 30 stories and is the fifth-tallest building in the city at the moment at 423.23 feet. Construction of the building was finished in 1969.

I have been a 5th 3rd customer for over 30 years and had a terrible experience with a check that they refused to cash that was made out to myself and my husband. He had endorsed the check but the branch refused to cash it because he was not in the car with me. I called customer service and they said that was not their policy and that they should have cashed the check. I called the branch and they said customer service was wrong and that they would not cash the check. It was not a large check and there was plenty of money in my account. So I used another bank who had no issue with cashing the check. I don’t know why I am still with 5th 3rd.

About ready to close my accounts after 30 years.

I agree with those having issues with 5/3 now. I’ve been banking with them for over 30 years. “Customer service” is now a complete joke. They used to be so customer oriented. Now, I’m talking to very young people who couldn’t care less. If they can’t find the info within 30 seconds, they just don’t care. The word “work” isn’t in their vocabulary. I’m about to find another bank.

Terrible What a horrible policy 53rd

I have a check for $4,000 that CLEARED the other bank. They say it’s a good check and that the funds are there.. 53rd has the money but they will not release it to me for 7 business days saying it’s their policy to place a hold on checks that are not Government checks. So now this is causing massive hardship for me because I can’t pay the bills that check was intended for. They just keep telling me that it’s Policy. What a stupid policy. They know it’s a good check, they have the money they just wont release it. They claim no one has the authority to release it.

    What’s happening to 5/3?

Up until now, I have been very happy with 5/3. I have been a customer since they purchased my previous bank over 20 years ago. I have been trying to reach my branch AND corporate customer service for days now. NO ANSWER, NO OPTION TO LEAVE A VOICE MESSAGE, and NO RETURN CALLS FROM ONLINE SCHEDULING! I can NOT recommend them at this time.
