History of First National Bank of Omaha

First National is the oldest bank in Omaha. The bank opened its doors as Kountze Brothers Bank in 1857. It was named after the two brothers who founded it; Herman Kountze and his brother Augustus.

When the bank started out, it was trading in buffalo hides and gold dust. In 1863, the bank received a national charter and started doing business as First National Bank of Omaha.

The growth of the bank is said to parallel that of the city of Omaha. One of people who served in the bank’s board of directors was Thomas Davis who helped in the founding of the Omaha.

The bank was among the first to target female bankers when it opened a Ladies’ Department in 1913. This section of the bank had features like female tellers and a more comfortable setting. This was one of the things that helped to make banking a commonplace activity for women.

In the wake of the Great Depression which resulted in over 750 banks in Nebraska shutting down, First National Bank stayed open past hours and honored every withdrawal request that came. This was proof that the bank was strong despite the situation.

First National was the fifth bank in the whole country to offer its own credit card back in 1953. In the same year, the bank started offering merchant solutions to 125 merchants in the region.

First National Bank of Omaha Headquarters

The headquarters of First National of Nebraska and, by extension, First National Bank of Omaha are located at First National Bank Tower which is located at 1601 Dodge Street in downtown Omaha.

The tower stands at 634 feet and has 45 stories to the top. Upon its completion, it became the tallest building between Denver and Chicago.

Construction of First National Bank Tower was completed back in 2002 on the site of the previous Medical Arts Building. Part of the ornamental façade from the previous building can still be seen inside the glass lobby.

The height of the building was chosen intentionally to just make it taller than the tallest building in Des Moines, Iowa i.e. the 801 Grand. The building has 729,998 square feet of space inside.

The city’s skyline has changed significantly since construction of the building was completed. First National Bank Park is just across from the tower.
