The History of First National Bank

The history of this bank runs parallel with the history of Omaha. One of the original board of directors of the bank helped in the founding of the city. Thomas Davis donated gold dust worth $600 to pay of the charter.

The bank started as the Kountze Brothers Bank in 1857. It was named after Herman and Augustus Kountze who owned it.

In the beginning, the bank traded in buffalo hides and gold dust. In 1863, the bank received a national charter and in the same year they started operating as First National Bank of Omaha.

First National is the oldest National Bank west of the Missouri. The bank’s owners did a lot to help the development of Omaha. Herman Kountze donated 60 acres of his land where the Trans-Mississippi Exposition would be developed. The expo would bring in as many as 2.6 million people.

The bank was also one of the first to try and target female customers. In 1913, the bank started a Ladies Department. The tellers were female and the setting was quite comfortable. This was one of the things that made banking a regular activity for women.

The Headquarters

The headquarters of First National Bank is the First National Bank Tower. This skyscraper is located in downtown Omaha.

The First National Bank Tower stands at 634 ft. tall and is the tallest building in Nebraska. The building has 45 stories.

Construction of the building was completed in 2002 after the demolition of the Medical Arts Building which previously stood there. The building’s height was chosen with the intention of making it taller than the 801 Grand in Iowa. The two buildings do have the same number of stories.

Several interesting features about the building include:

  • A large section of the ornamental facade that was in the previous building can still be seen in the glass lobby.
  • There is a large light on the roof of the building. The building is usually white but is changed to green during the festive season.
  • The tower is the location for Trek up the Tower, a stair climb race that’s presented by the Wellness Council of the Midlands.
  • The tower is only four feet taller than the 801 Grand.
  • The First National Bank Park is located across the tower. The park has a fountain, benches and a public art display.
