Frost Bank is bank chartered in Texas. It’s based in San Antonio and currently has 139 branches in the state. It’s one of the largest banks that’s based in the state of Texas. It’s currently a subsidiary of the San Antonio based financial holding company, Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc.

For 113 years, the bank held a federal charter. This was finally converted to a state charter in June of 2012.

History of Frost Bank

The bank was established in San Antonio in 1868 by Colonel Thomas Claiborne Frost. The bank has grown since then, acquiring several other banks in the state. The holding company, Cullen/Frost Bankers, Inc., was formed in 1977 when Frost Bank Corp. merged with Cullen Bankers, Inc. which was based in Houston.

In 1982, Cullen/Frost was part of another major merger when it merged with United States National Bancshares, Inc. (USNB) which was based in Galveston, TX. However, USNB was operated remotely for more than twenty years afterwards.

USNB was the last bank to use the title, United States National Bank. This ended when the banks charter was folded into Frost Bank’s charter in 2000.

Frost Bank in Recent Times

In the early 80s, Frost Bank was number 10 in the list of largest banks with their headquarters in Texas. This, however, changed in the coming years and it would emerge top of the pile ten years later.

Many banks in Texas would suffer due to the challenges in the real estate market and the decline in energy prices. Of the top 10 banks in Texas, only Frost came out in one piece, never having needed to merge with another financial institution from outside the state and without assistance from the federal government.

During the 2008 financial crisis, Frost Bank was the first bank nationwide to turn down bailout funds from TARP. In fact, since the end of 2007, the bank had doubled the size of its assets. As of the end of 2014, the bank’s assets had reached $28.6 billion while its trust, brokerage and advisory assets were valued at $35.6 billion.

The Headquarters

Frost Bank is headquartered in the Frost Bank Tower which is located in downtown San Antonio. The skyscraper has 22 stories in total and has a height of 300 feet.

Construction of the building was completed in 1975 and it is currently the 11th tallest building in San Antonio, TX.

The Frost Bank Tower

Although it’s not the bank’s headquarters, the Frost Bank Tower in Austin, TX is perhaps the more iconic building that bears the banks name. The building is 515 feet tall and is the third tallest building in Austin.

The building was officially opened in 2004 and is estimated to have been put up at a cost of $137 million. The building hosts the bank’s Austin headquarters and also the banks insurance division.

The building has been the subject of a lot of architectural interest. Readers of the Austin Chronicle voted it as the “Best New Building” From 2004 to 2008. The building also won the 2005 International Association of Lighting Designers Award of Merit.
