• 1896 – The bank dropped the national charter for a state charter. It underwent reorganization and became State Savings Bank of Ionia.
• 1924 – Two of the bank’s offices in Ionia were merged and they became the Ionia main office.
• 1952 – The bank changed its name and became First Security Bank
• 1973 – The year marked the formation of Independent Bank Corporation. However, the corporation remained dormant until its acquisition of First Security Bank on 1^st of June the following year.

• 1993 – The bank added offices in Unionville and Caro, marking its entry into the Thumb region
• 1996 – The bank expanded further into Northern Michigan, opening offices in Hillman, Alpena, Rogers City and Hale

Independent Bank was one of the financial institutions to benefit from the Troubled Asset Relief Program during the financial crisis in 2008. The bank received $72 million from the US Treasury in Dec, 2008 and paid back the money in 2013.
