History of Middlesex Savings Bank

It has been more than 180 years since the first of Middlesex Savings Bank’s predecessors was established. The key points in the bank’s history were:

  • 1835: The bank was launched as Middlesex Institution for Savings in the Town of Concord. At that time, banking was more business oriented than consumer oriented. This bank was founded to serve less affluent people.
  • The bank was founded as a mutual bank. This would mean that the interests of the residents in the community would never be secondary to the needs of an outside shareholder. This model has served the bank well.
  • Over its history, the bank had to withstand a lot of challenges including New England storms and the Great Depression.
  • In 1982, the bank merged with Natick Five Cents Savings Bank and the name of the institution was changed to Middlesex Savings Bank.
  • Native Five Cents Savings Bank was formed in 1959 as a State Savings Bank
  • Following the merger, the bank continued to grow and opened new branches in new communities.
  • In 1988, the bank merged with Assabet institution for Savings in Maynard
  • In 2009, the bank was involved in another merger once again with Strata Bank which was once known as Medway Savings Bank
