NBT Bank is a financial institution that’s based in Norwich in the state of New York. The bank is subsidiary of NBT Bancorp Inc. The parent company is traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market. It uses the symbol NBTB.

The bank has over 150 branches which are located in states such as:

In 2016, NBT Bank recorded a net income of $78.409 million. In the same year, the bank’s assets rose to $8.86 billion. Loans also went up to $6.198 billion and deposits rose to $6.973 billion.

A Brief History of NBT Bank

NBT Bank started its operations in July 1956. The bank was opened as the Bank of Norwich and was first located on South Main Street or 18 South Broad Street as it’s now known.

The bank’s initial office was a small storefront. The same location is currently a block away from where the bank’s headquarters are now located.

The bank was operating under a state charter and had an initial capital of $125,000. In today’s currency, that would be equal to roughly $2.5 million. Initially, the stockholders were 39 in total with James H. Smith serving as the bank’s first president.

In the first 35 years of its operations, the bank had earned increased its initial capital by 400%. By 1908, the number of stockholders had risen to 111.  Many of these individuals were Norwich residents working in many different occupations.

The bank paid its first dividend in 1857. Initially, the dividends were paid semi-annually at a rate of 8%. Later, this reduced to 5%. In the 160 years since it paid its first dividend, the bank has never missed to pay one although the rates have varied in that time. By the end of 2016, the bank was paying out its 499^th consecutive dividend.

Over the years, the bank has had several names. These were:

• Bank of Norwich; 1856 to 1865
• The National Bank of Norwich; 1865 to 1925
• The National Bank and Trust Company of Norwich; 1925 to 1989
• The National Bank and Trust Company; 1989 to 1995
• NBT Bank, N.A.; 1995 to present

The bank has increased in size thanks to many acquisitions and mergers throughout the years starting in the 1930s.

NBT Bank Headquarters

NBT Bank’s headquarters are located on 52 South Broad Street in Norwich. This has been the site of the bank’s headquarters since 1956. The location is only one block away from the site of the bank’s only previous headquarters.

The headquarters are located in what is now the bank’s corporate campus. The campus recently underwent major renovations between 2002 and 2004. A new board suite was built at the headquarters and the bank’s branch within the same building was also upgraded.

State-of-the-art telecom and multimedia features were added to the board suite. The interior space was also improved.

A new executive area was added to the headquarters in 2004. Presently, the campus includes six buildings and more than 500 people work at the campus.
