History of the Bank

Old National Bank was the first bank to be established in Evansville in 1834. Since then, the bank has operated under a number of names including Old State National Bank and Evansville National Bank. It took on its current name in 1922.

Old National was one of only four banks in Evansville that were still surviving by the end of 1935. Before the stock market crash that signaled the start of the great depression. The bank holding company was formed in 1983. This was in anticipation of the change in regulations in the coming decades.

Old National Bank acquired First United Savings Bank in 1995, a move that cost it $18 million in stock. The bank also acquired Workingmens Capital Holdings in Bloomington along with its banking subsidiary, Workingmens Federal Savings Bank.

After the 2008 financial crisis, Old National was one of the beneficiaries of the Troubled Asset Relief Program, receiving $100 million. However, by March 2009, the bank had repaid the money.

In 2009, Old National bought Charter One’s operations in Indiana and the bank’s branches became Old National’s. The bank also acquired Monroe Bancorp in Bloomington for $90 million and Integra Bank in 2011. The following year, the bank also acquired 24 branches from Bank of America in southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana.

Tower Bank (Fort Wayne), United Bank (Ann Arbor), Lafayette Savings Bank (Lafayette) and Founders Bank and Trust (Grand Rapids) were also acquired by Old National in 2014.

In 2016, Old National acquired AnchorBank (Wisconsin) for $461 million. The following year, Old National entered into an agreement to buy Anchor Bank of Minnesota.

Old National Bank’s headquarters are located in Evansville and was the first high-rise building in the state that was constructed with LEED principles in mind.

The building is located by the riverfront in the city’s downtown area and it offers 252, 000 square feet of space.
