History of Renasant Bank

Renasant Bank was formed in 1904 by several prominent businessmen coming from Lee County. At that time, it was known as The Peoples Bank & Trust Company.

Just a few years after the bank was established, the 1907 Bankers’ Panic led to the closure of around 100 banks within Mississippi. However, the bank would survive this through what it describes as ‘excellent leadership’.

This wouldn’t be the only crisis the bank would have to survive to get to where it is today. In 1929, 68 banks in the state were shut down during the financial crisis.

The outbreak of the Second World War would, however, mark the start of a resurgent period for the bank. Between 1954 and 1973, the assets of Renasant Bank would grow from $3 million to $73 million.

In the 70s and 80s, the bank would start to grow rapidly as it opened more branches and also started to acquire other financial institutions. This growth would continue into the 90s as it acquired even more banks in places such as:

  • Aberdeen
  • Grenada
  • New Albany
  • Batesville
  • DeSoto County

The bank also opened a number of de novo banks such as in Aberdeen and Olive Branch.

Following a decision to expand the range of financial services, Renasant Bank acquired an insurance agency in Tupelo and also added another based in Corinth.

The bank’s first move outside the state of Mississippi came in 2004 when it acquired Renasant Bancshares of Memphis. Thanks to the merger, the bank was able to change its name and Renasant Bank, as it’s now known, was born.

The bank would make yet another acquisition within Tennessee; Capital Bancorp, Inc. and this gave it seven more locations in the state.

By 2007, the assets of Renasant bank were valued at $3.4 billion.
