History of Spokane Teachers Credit Union

Spokane Teachers Credit Union was launched in 1934. An English teacher by the name of Ernie McElvain is the one who launched the institution, collecting the money from his fellow teachers.

At that time, the credit union used a shoebox to hold their receipts and cash. Due to lack of easy means of communication. A bell was hung on a rope on a second story window. Members would pull the rope to let the credit union know that they were there.

At the end of its first year the bank had assets that were valued at $4000 and the number of members had reached 120.

In 1964, 30 years after the credit union had started, STCU finally left the high school and opened its very first office.
