Union County Bank was acquired in 1988 by United Community Banks which had been incorporated a year earlier. The bank would finally take on the United Community Bank name in 1996. Other acquisitions that were made included:

When Georgia changed its bank laws, United Community Bank also started opening new branches apart from buying out other financial institutions. The bank also acquired assets First Clayton Bank and Trust and another bank in Cornelia.

The bank rounded off its acquisitions of the 90s by paying $7.1 million+ for Bank of Adairsville’s parent company. It also acquired 1^st Floyd Bank in the same year.
