History of Zions Bancorporation

By the time Zions Bancorporation was initially formed, the original settles in Salt Lake had only been there for 26 years and Utah was yet to become a state. The bank was incorporated as Zion’s Savings Bank and Trust Company.

The banks initial stock was $200,000. On the day the bank’s doors were opened for the first time, $5876 in deposits were made to the bank. For the next 2 decades, the bank prospered until 1893.

In 1893, the ‘Panic of 1893’ made things difficult for the bank but despite the challenges during this time, the bank managed to remain solvent and also continued to grow.

Zions didn’t just grow on its own. Thanks to it, several businesses in Utah were able to grow. Some of the companies that were financed by Zions Bank Include:

  • Bingham Copper Company A.K.A. Kennecott Copper
  • Big Cottonwood Power Company A.K.A. Rock Mountain Power
  • Salt Lake Gas Company A.K.A. Questar Gas
  • Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad Company A.K.A. Union Pacific

Two other major challenges that Zions Bancorp has survived through include the 1907 depression and the 1929 stock market crash. Both of these incidents had a heavy impact on the banking industry in the industrialized world.

During the 1929 stock market crash, depositors withdrew $1.5 million in just 2.5 days. However, a defiant intervention by the bank’s president to demonstrate that the bank was strong changed this.

Zions Bancorporation first IPO was in January 1966. In the 60s and 70s, Zions would grow to become a major bank in the state after acquiring small banks.
