In the United States, electric cooperatives were created to provide electricity to rural areas where utilities owned by investors were not willing to serve or in areas where electricity was very expensive and the residents could not afford it. Electric Cooperatives are owned by members, governed by a board of directors and are not for profit. Choptank Electric is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative and provides electricity to about fifty three thousand commercial, residential and industrial members in nine counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Choptank Electric Cooperative was incorporated in the year 1938 after the creation of the Rural Electrification Act. The current name of the cooperative was acquired in 1942. In 1976, Choptank Electric merged with Old Dominion Electric Cooperative in order to get lower wholesale power costs.
