History of American Savings Bank

American Savings Bank was established in 1925. It was started with the intention of providing banking services to the local population in Honolulu.

When the bank was established, it went by the name American Building & Loan Company. In 1942, the company’s name was changed to American Savings & Loan Association. This was the bank’s name for the next 45 years.

Between 1955 and 1958, the number of account holders with the bank increased to 21,640 following the opening of offices on Hawai’i and Oahu.

In 1968, the bank opened its new corporate offices in Financial Plaza of the Pacific which had just been completed. The building was located at 915 Fort Street, the same location where bank’s previous main office had stood for 40 years.

During the 70s, the bank expanded into the nearby islands after making several purchases, notably Kauai Savings in 1971 and Maui Savings and Loan in 1973. The bank would also acquire Pacific Savings & Loan Association of Hawai’i in 1977.

American Savings Bank was formed in 1987 as a subsidiary to handle the bank’s operations in Hawai’i. The bank was federally chartered.

In the 90s, the bank would make two key acquisitions:

  • First Nationwide Bank
  • Bank of America’s operations in Hawai’i.

Following the latter acquisition in 1997, the bank became the 3rd largest in the state.
