History of Hancock Whitney Bank

In 1899, nineteen people came together in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi and formed the Hancock County Bank. The bank had $10,000 in capital and deposits of $8,277.41.

At its founding, the bank was intended to benefit from the trade of wool, cotton, lumbar and poultry which was booming in the area at the time.

A few years later, in 1902, the bank was opening a branch in Pearlington, MI and another would soon follow in Pass Christian, MI. The latter was popular with people from the north who were trying to get away from the harsh winter conditions and also with well-to-do persons from New Orleans who wanted to escape the heat in summer.

The branches in Logtown and Pearlington would be shut down following the lumber industry’s downturn. Afterwards, the company shifted its focus to Gulfport and Biloxi. Gulfport had been left without a bank after the 1929 stock market crash. The businessmen in the town turned to the bank to open a branch in Gulfport.

The bank opened two branches in the city. In 1933, the bank moved to where One Hancock Plaza is currently located and at the same time, changed its name to Hancock Bank as it made this city its permanent home.

Over the years, Hancock bank acquired several banks including:

  • American Bank of Baton Rouge (1990)
  • Washington Bank and Trust Co. (1994)
  • American Security Bank (1999)
  • Lamar Bank (2001)
  • Guaranty National Bank (2004)
  • Whitney Holding Corporation (2011)

In 2018, the bank would also acquire Capital One’s trust and asset management business.
