A Brief History

Santander Bank was founded as Sovereign Bank in 1902 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. At that time, it was a savings and loans association. Most of the bank’s early clients were textile workers.

The bank owes its current size to the savings and loan crisis in the 80s and 90s. During this time, as the Federal Savings and Land Insurance Corporation was closing down failing institutions, Sovereign Bank went on an acquisition spree. In 2000, the bank was Boston Area’s 3rd largest retail bank.

The parent company of Santander Bank was founded 45 years before Sovereign Bank as Banco Santander. In 2006, it would begin the purchase of Sovereign Bank. The purchase would be completed in 2008 after Sovereign lost money from car loans and its purchase of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae shares.

The company moved its headquarters to Boston from Wyomissing in August 2011 and adopted the Santander name in 2013.
