History of the Credit Union

UW Credit Union was founded by seven members of the University of Wisconsin with the intention of creating a university based credit union.

The seven submitted the charter application in 1931 and that was when the credit union was established after it had been approved by commissioner of banking.

The bank’s original charter was signed by seven people:

  1. Walter Morton
  2. Harold Groves – Former student of the university and faculty member in the Department of Economics in 1931.
  3. Selig Perlman – Former student of the university and faculty member in the Department of Economics in 1931
  4. Ellison Chalmers – Graduate Student
  5. Genevieve Townsend – Graduate Student
  6. G. Rice, Jr – Law Professor
  7. Friedrich Bruns – Professor of German

Following the establishment of the credit union, five of the members who signed the charter were among the credit union’s first board members. Selig Perlman was chosen as the President with W.G. Rice serving as the vice president.

In the beginning the credit union couldn’t afford to employ staff. Therefore, to enable the processing of loan requests, the members were chosen by the board of directors to serve on the credit committee.

The work of the credit committee was to consider the loan requests and prioritize them depending on the availability of funds.

The importance of the credit union would be realized just two months after it was opened. Capital City Bank closed and there were people who couldn’t access their money. The credit union started to approve emergency loans for the affected individuals.
