MLGW supplies natural gas to more than 320,000 customers in Shelby County. Transmission companies sell their natural gas to MLGW since MLGW does not drill for gas. Once the transmission companies deliver gas to the MLGW’s city gate stations, gas is measured and then sold. MLGW adds a chemical odorant and then adjusts the pressure to match the distribution system. MLGW has more than 4,600 miles of distribution lines and delivers gas to businesses and homes in Shelby County. The gas passes through a meter that records the consumption rate. Unlike other utilities that get water from rivers and lakes, Memphis gets water from an aquifer which is beneath Shelby County. The aquifer has more than one hundred trillion gallons of water believed to have fallen on earth a long time ago. MLGW owns a large artisan well that taps into the aquifer and provides water to more than 200,000 customers. MLGW has more than one hundred and seventy wells and ten water pumping stations in Shelby County.
